We learned how to count in binary, and we learned that a single binary digit is a bit and that there are 8 bits in a byte and the way binary works there are 1024 bytes in a kilobyte. We learned about binary and how robots understand 1 and 0, on and off and translate that through software to think. Then we built an electromagnetic solenoid and attempted to have it operate a mechanical finger. We discussed batteries, motors, and magnetism. Today's lesson was about how robots move. RiQ's "eyes" which are an ultrsonic sensor are more like ears and they work like a bat uses echolocation. We discussed sensors and worked on getting RiQ to move around in a square. The students experimented with RiQ and having him make sounds and move around. We also built a tilt sensor using ball bearings, a straw, and safety pins. We experimented with air pressure using pistons and tubing. Students worked through Pneumatics experiments and programed RiQ to play "Jingle Bells" They incorporated loops and conditionals into the algorithm and also learned how to debug.
Students wrote algorithms for a playing card game that they made up. We worked through an offline hour of code. The most popular lesson was Minecraft with Star Wars coming in 2nd. Today was our third official Hour of Code.
